Propane (HC – 290) as an Alternative Refrigerant in the Food Transport Refrigeration Sector in Southern Africa – a Review

Most of the food transport trucks in Sothern Africa are equipped with refrigeration and air conditioning systems filled fluorocarbon refrigerants such as R404A to facilitate heat transfer process. These synthetic chemicals have high potential cause global warming damage ozone layer. Currently, natural considered alternatives these man-made mitigate some environmental risks. The substances that occur nature hydrocarbons (HC), ammonia, carbon dioxide. type been market for many years, but applications domestic refrigerators, pumps, chillers, conditioners, whereas fluorocarbons mostly used systems. Natural propane (HC – 290) now penetrating where previously were favoured option. Therefore, this work reports possibilities using non-fluorinated hydrocarbon/natural refrigerant (propane R290) refrigerated Southern Africa; a case study South Africa. R290 has lower greenhouse gases emissions compared hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) which widely most existing negligible Global Warming Potential (GWP) 3 is well below threshold value 150. review revealed capacity average 10 30% higher than commonly R134A. Since labeled flammable refrigerant, present also reviews its flammability safety measures.
